Reproductive Anatomy
Female Anatomy
The female reproductive tract consists of the ovaries, oviduct/fallopian tube, uterus, cervix, vagina and vulva. The ovaries are responsible for egg production and secretion of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. Females are born with all their lifetime supply of eggs. At ovulation, the egg is released from a follicle on the ovary into the fallopian tube. The fallopian tube aids in transporting the egg and sperm together and is the site of fertilization. If fertilization takes place, the uterus provides a favorable environment for the developing young, and at kidding, its muscles contract to expel the fetus. The uterus consists of two uterine horns and a uterine body. The cervix functions as the opening to the uterus as well as providing a seal, or mucus plug, during pregnancy to prevent any infection that could harm the developing young. The organ of copulation and the site of semen deposition is the vagina, while the external opening is called the vulva.
