AUBURN UNIVERSITY, Ala. — The time that a family spends together is important. Because of the economic downturn families are facing, it is important for them to maintain closeness and togetherness by planning activities that will not require spending a lot of money.
Each family member should have an opportunity to help plan family time together.
Here are some ways to bring your family together without spending a lot of money.
One way is mealtime. Mealtime is a time that a family shares in the kitchen and also at the dinner table. Preparing meals together creates teachable moments. First, family members cook the food, dividing the meal into parts so each person can contribute to preparing the meal. After the meal is prepared, the family sits down at the dinner table and shares conversation together. It's fun to talk and laugh, while showing an interest in one another.
Another way is family game night. Family game night is a fun time for fellowship and silliness and a time to play board games.
It is important to make time for your family. Many families find its members going in different directions. Build strong relationships with your spouse by spending quality time with him or her. It will also teach your children how to build a healthy family and a healthy home environment.
The first thing families can do is plan a family meeting. Discuss the goals of the family and how you plan to accomplish them.
After the family has shared ideas and set goals, write down dates for family nights on a calendar for all to see. Keeping a calendar will help the plan run smooth and keep family nights organized.
Ask each family member to share something they would like to see happen in your family. Family meal night is a great example. Change up the dinner meal some nights and prepare breakfast items instead of normal dinner items. Children also love pizza. Let family members choose their own toppings or make their own personal pizza. Get creative. Children have a lot of great ideas.
To maintain a strong and happy family, take time to listen. Set aside a day each week to have family meetings.
