Lighten Up The Fat Learning Lesson

The Self-Learning segments provide an in-depth look at important topics within each of the Families, Food, and Fitness areas. Each learning area is made up of multiple sections that may take more time than other material on the site to complete. Because the learning areas present more information, we suggest you set aside 15 – 30 minutes to enjoy the full benefit of each Self-Learning segment.


There are many ways you can reduce the amount of fat that is in your diet. However, there are many strategies you can utilize for your health.

In this lesson, you will:

  • Identify at least three risks of a high fat diet
  • Identify the sources of various types of fats
  • Accurately read a food label to determine fat and cholesterol content
  • Reduce consumption of high fat foods (number or size of servings)
  • Use cooking methods to prepare low fat meals and snacks
