With your menus written, you are ready to make your grocery list. Just like in menu planning, certain steps will help make this an easier task. With your menus and selected recipes in front of you, get your pencil and write a grocery list.

  • Write down all the foods needed to prepare the meals and snacks you have planned. Use the included grocery list, if you want.
  • List the items according to the layout of the grocery store to save shopping time.
  • Go back over the list and cross out any foods already on hand.
  • Keep a running grocery list in a handy spot to keep up with items you need, or to write down foods or new recipes you want to try.
  • Be sure to include staple foods: flour, meal, oil, seasonings, coffee, and such.
  • Include the size of each package or can when certain sizes are called for: for example: 3 oz. pkg. vanilla pudding.
  • Check sale ads and specials. Write down prices next to the item on your list.
  • Check for any coupons to use. Note them on your list. Clipping coupons and using them when you grocery shop can save you money if they are for foods you have on your list and if the coupon makes the price lower than similar brands and sizes. Just be sure to use them after taking time to clip them! Be sure to check expiration dates before getting to the checkout line.
