URBANA, Ill. - Even though we may now have less to spend less on clothing, we still want to look good and there are definitely ways we can, said a University of Illinois Extension consumer and family economics educator.
"Being happy with the way you look is important for keeping your morale up, and sometimes it's especially important, for example, when you're interviewing for that badly needed job," said Debbie Bartman.
Here are 10 tips for saving money on clothing:
1. Determine a clothing budget; then stay within it.
2. Buy the best quality you can afford. Clothes will look better and wear longer.
3. Buy color-coordinated clothes you can mix and match.
4. Shop out of season.
5. Buy well-constructed garments. They'll wear longer.
6. Buy wash and wear. Avoid the added expense of dry cleaning.
7. Learn to sew. Start by replacing buttons and hemming pants.
8. Look for online deals. Sign up for e-mail newsletters from retailers for sale notices and coupons.
9. Shop factory outlet stores, thrift shops, and rummage sales for good-quality items.
10. Care for your clothing. Check the care tags for instructions.
