Parenting Tips for Your 39-40 Month Old Child

Listen to your child talk. Now she says, “Me go bathroom.” When she reaches four, you will hear “I have to go to the bathroom.” Instead of pointing and saying “Doggie,” a four year old will say, “Look at the dog.”

Your child can understand and use almost 1,000 words. Preschoolers talk with family members, playmates, caregivers, teachers and other adults. Talking with all these people is good practice. The more your child talks and listens to others, the more words she will learn and use.

Many children at this age seem to stutter. This is because they think of words faster than they can say them. This sounds like stuttering. Do not worry. Be sure to give your child plenty of time to speak. Listen patiently and look at her. Encourage speech so she is not afraid to talk.

If she says some words wrong, include the right pronunciation in your answer. For example, Child: Can I have a bebana? You: Yes, I will get a banana for you.

This kind of response helps children want to try the word again.
