Parenting Tips for Your 19-20 Month Old Toddler

Keep your eyes open for funny situations and take time to appreciate them. Share laughter with your child. Your child will be this age only once, so enjoy it!

  • Look for funny situations. Take time to notice cute things your child says and does. Think about how you will remember a given situation in 10 years, or what you will tell your child about when she was a toddler.
  • Laugh with your child. When your child says or does something funny, tell her, “You called that cat a bear. That’s funny!” Laughing with your toddler teaches her thinking skills and helps you feel good about one another.
  • Write it down. Keep a journal of your toddler’s milestones to remember all those little moments. Choose a pretty notebook, and keep a pen or pencil attached to the cover so you can jot things down quickly. Every once in a while, go back and re-read the notebook. You’ll be surprised at the day-to-day things your child does that might be forgotten if you didn’t write them down.
  • Take pictures. A regular or digital camera can be a parent’s best friend. When your toddler dresses up in her daddy’s shoes, hides in an unusual place, or sleeps in a funny position, take a picture. Print them out and put them in a photo album or save photos on your computer, if you have one.
  • Share experiences with others. Collect little stories about your child to share with other family members. Send a quick note with a funny “kid story” to the grandparents.
