URBANA, Ill. -- Parents facing the "terrible two's" or toilet training issues with their toddlers have a new Web resource (http://urbanext.illinois.edu/toddlers/), called Dealing with Toddlers, and available at the click of a mouse from University of Illinois Extension.

"Young parents today have many challenges and any help they can get is appreciated," explained Jane Scherer, U of I Extension urban programs specialist and director of its websites. "This website addresses many of the common situations parents encounter with toddlers-- challenges in feeding a toddler, toilet training, and going through the 'no' phase.

"There is also a section on how to deal with toddlers who seem to get into everything, especially places they shouldn't."

Dealing with Toddlers is available in Spanish and was developed by Giesela Grumbach, a U of I Extension family life educator.

Learning about rivers

Illinois has a rich river heritage and school children can now learn about the awesome power and beauty of river systems on the Web (http://urbanext.illinois.edu/rivers/) available from U of I Extension.

"The All-Star River Explorers is an interactive website that helps users understand the development and importance of rivers to the history of the United States. The site covers the basics of rivers and their formation, including the fact that the Mississippi River originally was 100 miles to the east," Scherer said.

"There are also sections dealing with famous river explorers, the economic impact of rivers, and river management." The website, part of Extension's Schools Online program was developed by Duane Friend, Extension natural resources management educator and Greg Stack, Extension horticulture educator. It also includes a teacher's guide for use in the classroom.

What's up with corn?

As the corn harvest winds down, parents and teachers may encounter questions from youngsters, and a good place to go for answers is a U of I Extension site (http://urbanext.illinois.edu/corn/index.html) called The Great Corn Adventure.

"This is a fun, interactive website that young people can navigate themselves. Step by step, users can learn the history of corn, where it is grown, what it is used for, and other information," Scherer said.

The website also has a Spanish-language version, she added.
