MISSISSIPPI STATE -- Quality horses and beef cattle will move through the auction ring in two separate November sales as Mississippi State University plans to market 92 lots of cattle and about 40 horses from research herds.

The Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station and MSU’s Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences will host the 27th annual Livestock Production Sale of bulls, bred heifers and cows on Nov. 19. The university’s horse sale will follow on Nov. 21.

Both sales will take place at the Mississippi Horse Park, which is located on Poorhouse Road south of Starkville. Interactive video bidding during the cattle sale will take place at the Forrest County Extension office in Hattiesburg and the Central Mississippi Research and Extension Center in Raymond.

On Nov. 19, a $5 hamburger plate lunch will be served at noon by the MSU Collegiate Cattlemen’s Association, and the cattle sale will begin at 1 p.m.

Twelve commercially bred purebred cows and 51 bred commercial heifers from the MAFES research farms in Starkville, Raymond, Prairie and Poplarville will be sold with expected calving dates this fall and next spring. In addition to the heifers, 29 coming 2-year-old and yearling Angus, Charolais and Hereford bulls will be marketed.

The annual livestock production sale is conducted as part of the Managing Livestock Sales class taught at MSU. Students in the class play an integral role in sale activities.
