Birth Weight -(beef cattle)The weight of a calf within 24 hours after birth.

  • Estimated Progeny Differences- (EPD's) of the sire and dam are used to evaluate the genetic performance of the sire and dam to help determine birth weight before the calf is born.
  • Heavy birth weights are correlated with calving problems, but the conformations of the calf and the cow are contributing factors. Other factors that contribute to heavy or light birth weights are sire and dam breed genetics
