The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is a nutrition program for children and older adults who attend child care or adult care programs, funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The CACFP plays an important role in improving the quality of nutrition in child care. The program helps child care providers offer nutritious meals and snacks to children who attend child care centers, family child care homes and after-school care programs. By participating in the Child and Adult Care Food Program, child care programs can receive reimbursements for meals they serve to children, and parents can be ensured their children are receiving nutritious meals.

What Is Required for Child Care Programs to Join the CACFP

Child care programs must apply to be part of the CACFP, and must meet specific guidelines and requirements in order to participate. In order to meet CACFP requirements, you will need to:

  • Prepare and serve meals that meet CACFP guidelines
  • Keep records of your weekly menus
  • Keep attendance records of the children you serve
  • Practice good food safety
  • Attend training about food and nutrition
  • Submit your records to a local CACFP agency for reimbursement

To locate a local CACFP agency: Contact your county Extension office or local child care resource and referral agency, or go to the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program website.
