MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State University will host the International Equine Well-Being Symposium March 10-12 in Manhattan at the K-State Student Union’s Forum Hall.
“This is a symposium for anyone who has horses or is involved in any aspect of the equine industry – or is just a horse enthusiast,” said Chris Blevins, assistant professor in K-State’s College of Veterinary Medicine. “Our objective is to bring the latest information on basic equine welfare to horse owners and enthusiasts and stable owners and managers, and to certify and document equine welfare for individuals and farms.”
Presentations will include such topics as:
- Equine Health – Environment, Dentistry, Nutrition/Behavior, Tack/Riding, Feet/Hoof Care, Deworming;
- Boarding – Biosecurity, Safety, and Stall Cleaning;
- Nutrition – Age and Nutrition, Different Feeds for Different Horses, and Body Condition Scores;
- Different Horses for Different Needs – Geriatric, Foals, Rodeo, Trail Riding, Three-Day Eventing, and Endurance Rides;
- Humane Equine Management – Assessment and Certification;
- Unwanted Horse – Impact and Education; and
- Euthanasia – Proper Euthanasia, Dealing with the Loss, Carcass Disposal.
The fee to attend the symposium, which includes all symposium materials and two lunches is $100 per person. For students and veterinary technicians the fee is $35.
