SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- "When it comes to some of the proclaimed miracle qualities of onions, just keep in mind that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is," said Tammy Roberts, a nutrition and health education specialist with University of Missouri Extension.
Early Egyptians thought onions were sacred and used them to pay tribute to their gods.
The Gauls used onions to predict the weather. They thought that if the onion had many layers there would be a hard winter.
"In the world today, onions are one of the leading vegetable crops but only because we like to eat them. Onions are a part of many of our favorite dishes and are a condiment for some of our favorite foods like hamburgers and hot dogs," said Roberts.
