PRIMGHAR, Iowa — The grass is green and growing fast, and Iowans are putting their lawnmowers back into service, says Cheryl Clark, an Iowa State University Extension family life program specialist. Because a lawnmower is a powerful piece of equipment, Clark suggests starting the mowing season by instructing all family members, and particularly children, on safe practices.

“Many accidents occur when children try to get their parent’s attention,” Clark said. “Your child doesn’t understand that you may not be able to see or hear him or her.”

Each year hundreds of young children are backed over by lawnmowers, Clark said. Other children are injured from falling from a parent’s lap on a riding lawnmower.
