The 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill has been identified as an issue of special attention and content collaboration across a variety of subject areas. The event is of major concern to the Southern region of the United States because its impacts are widespread. In addition to the loss of human life during the accident and animal life from the resulting oil spill, this tragedy affects the region's economy and quality of life.
Cooperative Extension and Sea Grant program directors in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida have created several issue-focused task forces to address topics like tourism, aquaculture and fisheries, wildlife, food safety, environmental quality, livestock and crops, bioremediation, and family and business financial management. Each task force will identify resources, create content and disseminate educational and recovery information through eXtension, the Gulf of Mexico Sea Grant oil spill website and other appropriate avenues.
