A Brief History of Fire Ants in North Carolina
Red Imported Fire Ants were first discovered in NC in 1952 in ornamental nursery plants in both Wake and Mecklenburg Counties. These initial introductions were erradicated. No further introductions were found until 1957 when they were found in Brunswick County. This introduction was able to become established and began to spread. Red Imported Fire Ants can now be found in all or part of 56 counties in North Carolina.
