Our Gulf coast communities comprise people of diverse cultural perspectives and traditions, but they share a dependence on the Gulf of Mexico and its bounty for their livelihoods. A technological disaster like the Deepwater Horizon oil spill creates tremendous economic and emotional pressures that affect individuals and families alike, whether they speak English, Cambodian, Lao, Haitian/Creole, Spanish or Vietnamese.

Stress following a disaster can leave people feeling overwhelmed. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has produced several fact sheets in multiple languages that provide helpful tips for dealing with oil spill-related stress and grief.
