Hackers, attackers and intruders are all terms that describe people who seek to discover your computer and software weakness for their gain or enjoyment. Their intentions can be extremely damaging to you and your personal information, your business and your customers. A breach of data security can lead to financial consequences for a small business owner – not to say what the implications are for their customers.

According to the National Cyber Alert System, “the best defense is to understand the risks, what some of the basic terms mean, and what you can do to protect yourself against them.

To help you improve your business data and equipment security protocols, there is a video series from the “The Security Squad”. The series focuses on a set of action tools to help you develop and implement a security plan. Topics include technology inventory, creating strong passwords, making secured backups and copies of your information, protecting your office from viruses and malware, limiting your exposure via your wireless, understanding firewalls, buying and selling on-line and creating employee policy use of technology.

The Security Squad are concerned University of Nebraska educators and a web developer from Nebraska who want to make sure you have accurate information to make sure your business has a Security Plan in place. Thru the viewing of the video series and by completing the Supplemental Security workbook, you will be one step closer to making sure the weak links in your computer and software are closed links so you can protect your business information as well as your customers.

The series is one of several modules available at eCommerce Extension Initiative.

The materials were developed as part of the Southern Rural Development Center’s eCommerce Extension Initiative.
