There are two basic types of connections to the internet: Dial-up and broadband. You may have heard broadband referred to as "always on" or "high speed." Either of these connections, but more commonly broadband, may be available wired or wireless. A wireless connection requires a special card for your computer which allows you to receive wireless internet signals. Wireless internet signals are becoming increasingly more prevalent in hotels, businesses, coffee shops and restaurants - you may notice businesses advertising Wi-Fi, the common term for wireless internet access. Wi-Fi equipment may also be purchased for personal use, such as in your home.
Dial-up Connection
A dial-up connection works through a device in your computer called a modem. A modem changes information in your computer to a form that can be sent over the telephone lines. A FAX machine works much the same way - it turns the information from the paper into a signal that can be sent via the telephone. Since the modem uses your phone line, your connection speed may not be very fast. Also, you will not be able to use your phone while connected to the internet.
Broadband
There are several types of broadband available. Any type of broadband will require a special card for your computer that may or may not be standard equipment for your particular computer. Two of the most common broadband connections are
- Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) - DSL may be offered by your phone company or another provider and transfers information up to 30 times faster than a dial-up connection. DSL requires a special modem and does not use your phone line and requires that a "splitter" be added to your phone line. One benefit of DSL, besides the added speed, is that you can still talk on the phone while surfing the internet.
- High Speed Cable Internet - Internet access provided by your cable company and transfers information up to 80 times faster than a dial-up connection. Cable internet service requires a cable modem that may be provided with your service. Since cable internet access utilizes your cable connection you will still be able to use your phone while connected to the internet.
What Does an Internet Connection Cost?
Dial-up internet is the most basic way to get connected to the internet. Also, depending on where you live, it may be your only option - DSL and cable internet are not offered in all areas.
Broadband service is a bit more expensive and also requires extra equipment, such as a splitter or cable modem or special card for your computer. Some service providers may give you the option of buying or leasing the special equipment needed so the per month cost may be more.
According to a study conducted by Pew Internet, users reported an average monthly bill of $37.60 in April 2009, with broadband subscribers saying they paid an average of $39.00 per month, dial-up users $26.60.
