LINCOLN, Neb. — A Feb. 12 University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension workshop will assist established meat goat producers in learning more ways to manage their enterprises and will be of value to those wishing to enter into meat goat production -- whether for profit or fun.
The Eastern Nebraska Meat Goat Workshop will be from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at UNL’s Agricultural Research and Development Center near Mead at the August. N. Christenson Research and Education Building. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.
The workshop is aimed at those who are new to goat production, as well as established goat producers, said Sara Ellicott, UNL Extension educator in Saunders County.
"It will be of interest to those looking at raising goats for profit or acreage owners looking at having a few goats as domesticated animals," she said.
Topics and speakers
- Diversified Ag Opportunities in Southeast Nebraska – Gary Lesoing, UNL Extension educator, SARE Program, farmer/rancher grants;
- Goat Budgets, Roger Wilson, UNL budget analyst, farm management;
- Marketing, Kiley Hammond, meat goat and sheep feeder and buyer, Ravenna Land and Livestock;
- Meat Goat Management Wheel and Estrus Synchronization, Jim Humphrey, livestock specialist, University of Missouri Extension;
- Quality Assurance, Ellicott; and
- a speaker panel with time for questions and answers.
Early registration is recommended to reserve a seat and resource materials. Cost is $30 for those registering by Feb. 4 and $10 per additional person from the same family (spouse or child). After Feb. 4, the fee is $40 for the first person and $25 per additional person from the family.
Fees include reference materials and lunch. Make checks payable to UNL Extension in Saunders County and mail to 1071 County Road G, Room B, Ithaca, NE 68033-2234.
