Salmonellosis - an infection of the Salmonella bacteria, usually affects the intestines and causes gastroenteritis. It is highly contagious among animals and it is also an important zoonosis. In severe forms, it can cause septicemia, shock and death. Most animals with Salmonellosis have mild symptoms such as stomach upset and fever. Most commonly caused by eating foods with large amounts of Salmonella bacteria present. Can also occur after administration of antibiotics, since the Salmonella bacteria is normally found in healthy animals in low numbers; antibiotics can upset the normal intestinal bacteria levels and lead to rapid increase in Salmonella numbers.
