Yes - to maintain the fertility of your pasture, you should perform a soil test at least every three years and follow its recommendations for fertilizer/lime applications. See your county Cooperative Extension Agent for help conducting the soil test. There is no need to remove horses from the pasture during fertilization unless they are frightened of the application machinery. However, you should be sure that no large clumps of fertilizer or open bags of fertilizer are left where horses can eat them because consumption of excessive amounts of fertilizer may be harmful to the horse.
