A good rule of thumb is one horse per 2 acres of pasture in the East, Midwest and South. However, this rate varies widely from one region to the next depending on rainfall, soil type and fertility level. In the western regions of the country (average rainfall of 10-15 inches per year), it is recommended to have one horse per 10-20 acres of pasture.
