How should I feed salt and minerals?

Salt and minerals should be fed in "loose form" under shelter to prevent rain, etc. from contaminating the products. Although horses can get some of their dietary requirement of salt from salt blocks, it is much more desirable to incorporate both salt and minerals into the grain diets of horses. With this method, the horse owner will know exactly the quantity needed and the amount of intake based on daily feedings. Feeding salt and minerals free choice leaves horse owners guessing as to actual intake by each horse. Providing salt blocks for stalled horses can lead to increased salt intake due to boredom. Consequently, the horse will drink larger quantities of water, urinate more and generally make a mess in the stall.
