Do oats have to be crimped or rolled?

Last Updated: April 19, 2006

Studies show little or no improvement in digestibility of oats when processed and fed to horses with normal teeth. Barley, wheat, corn, and milo, however, should be cracked, crimped or rolled before feeding to horses. Research has always shown there is no advantage in cooking, fermenting or predigesting food for horses with good teeth. Steeping wheat bran in warm water (50 degrees C) for one hour does not affect digestibility of dry matter, protein or phosphorus.
