Prior to the breeding season, the stallion's penis should be cleaned several times. He should be washed with a mild liquid dish soap. During the breeding season, the stallion's penis should only be washed with soap periodically. It has been shown that washing a stallion's penis with soap every time he is bred will alter the bacterial flora present. Beneficial bacteria that help keep pathogenic bacteria in check are removed. Pathogenic bacteria then are more likely to survive, which may cause infertility problems. Therefore, during the breeding season a stallion's penis should only be washed on an as-needed basis. However, you can rinse the stallion's penis with warm water prior to breeding if desired.
