Can I breed my stallion as long as he is fertile?

Last Updated: July 19, 2006

In most cases, you can continue to breed a stallion as long as he is physically capable. When conducting a breeding soundness examination, consider factors other than semen quantity and quality. With older stallions, give particular attention to health and physical appearance. Injuries to the hind legs may prevent the stallion from breeding mares or cause problems when breeding. Arthritis in older stallions may be so painful in the joints that they refuse to mount a mare. Balance and respiratory function may be impaired with age. Some stallions that have had trouble mounting have been taught to ejaculate into an artificial vagina while standing.
