What is foal heat?

Last Updated: April 29, 2006

View as web page

It is the time 7 to 11 days after foaling that the mare is receptive to the stallion and will stand for breeding. Some mares will show foal heat as early as 1 to 2 days. Ovulation usually occurs on the eighth to twelfth day after foaling. Some mares may not show the behavioral signs of being in heat at this time due in part to being protective of the newborn foal. However, a very high percentage of mares will develop follicles and ovulate.
