An oral progestin, allyl trenbolone (altrenogest), has been used successfully in mares going through the transition period between winter anestrus and normal estrus. After 10 to 15 days of oral administration, it is withdrawn and estrus is usually exhibited within two to five days. Altrenogest will block heat and ovulation for as long as it is administered. It is also used in show mares to prevent them from cycling.
