The mare should be removed from all endophyte-infected fescue at least 30 days prior to expected foaling. It is recommended that you monitor her through the foaling process to ensure that there are no complications and that she has normal milk production. If the mare cannot be removed from endophyte-infected fescue consumption prior to foaling, then you may wish to consult your veterinarian as there are some medications that can help counteract the effects of endophyte-infected fescue consumption. Some horse owners have been successful at lessening the effects of the endophyte-infected fescue by feeding an additional forage source, such as hay, to the mare in the pasture.
