Is it normal for a mare to have larger teats or look as though she has just weaned a baby or as if she were about to foal?

This is not considered normal, but it is also not a big concern as long as you or another horse is not trying to express milk from the udder. No one has really determined why some mares that are not pregnant or have not been nursing will have udder development. The current thought on this is that the mare may be consuming a forage such as a legume (i.e., alfalfa or clover) that may be estrogenic. We see this condition in open (non-pregnant) mares at a relatively low percentage, but it does occur. It is not a major concern as long as the mare seems otherwise normal and healthy.
