How much weight can a horse carry?

Last Updated: July 24, 2006

View as web page

How much weight your horse can carry depends on a couple of factors. One has to do with the size of your horse and the other with his maturity level. If your horse is over 1100 pounds and is four years of age or older, it should be able to handle your weight. We do not know of any research that has looked specifically at what the maximum weight load would be for various sized and aged horses, but we know of many men between 250 and 300 pounds riding horses for pleasure and performance. Another factor related to weight is experience of the rider. Riders with good balance and horsemanship skills, make weight load less of a problem for the horse.
