Rice bran is the outer layer of the rice kernel that is removed during the processing of rice. Rice bran has a very high fat content (~20%) and in the raw form becomes rancid very quickly and should not be used for horse supplements. Stabilized rice bran, however, is still high in fat, does not spoil and can be used as an energy supplement for horses in heavy work. Rice bran is about 13% crude protein, high in vitamin E but low in calcium. Rice bran is also very high in phosphorus, which is estimated to be about 50% available in rice bran. Therefore, additional calcium will be needed to maintain an appropriate Ca:P ratio. Rice bran should be fed as a supplement to a balanced diet and limited to 1 to 2 pounds per day for those horses requiring extra energy to maintain body weight.
