More than likely, the horse is just clearing his throat and nothing is wrong with him. Many horses will develop mild allergy-like signs during the peak allergy season, and they will have mild accumulations of mucus that they must clear from their trachea by coughing. This is the most likely scenario, especially if the horse has continued to eat normally. Other possibilities could be some obstructive diseases of the lungs or infection. I would monitor the horse closely to make sure that he continues to eat and drink in a normal manner, and if the problem continues or gets worse, have a veterinarian perform an examination to determine the cause and possible treatment.
