1. Hobble the mare and permit the foal to access her teats.
2. Cervically palpate the mare and rub cervical mucus on the foal's head, neck and top line.
3. Mask the mare's sense of smell with Vick's Vapor Rub in her nostrils; the mare will be less likely to reject the foal.
