Why do horses display a higher incidence of impaction colics during abrupt environmental temperature decreases below 45 degrees F?

Water intake decreases as water temperature falls below 45o F. Lack of water intake causes decreased saliva production, which results in drier ingesta. The increased dry matter of ingesta increases the possibility of impaction colics.
