How do you stop a horse from cribbing?

Cribbing is a habit believed to be brought on by boredom or stomach ulcers as a young horse, or it can be copied by other horses. Cribbing straps are used by many horse owners to deter or manage a horse that cribs. Muzzles can also be used. There is an operation that basically cuts the neck muscle that the horse uses to grab and pull with. Results are good in young horses and horses just beginning to crib. Results in older and long-term cribbers have been less positive. More recently, shocking devices similar to those used to train dogs have been used to discourage bad behavior such as cribbing, and reported results are positive. However, consistency and persistence are critical for good results. Some horse owners have found them useful, and others have not.
