I recently purchased a stallion. Should I allow him to sniff or ''meet'' other horses face to face? I plan on trail riding him on a regular basis and was told when trailering them to put Vicks Vapor Rub in his nose. Is this correct?

It sounds as if he has been well schooled on how to act. It is true about not letting him come face to face, nuzzle or smell other horses on the trail or at a show. He has probably been taught not to show his stallion side when being ridden or shown. It is fine to stall him in the barn with other horses, but to be on the safe side, always put a gelding next to him or a mare that is not in heat, or put him next to an empty stall. Once you start breeding him, you might see a change in his behavior around other horses, particularly mares. He may want to talk to them more than he does now, but with proper training, he can continue to be shown. When riding him on a trail, you will always need to be aware of the horse in front of you and not ride up behind them. If a mare is in heat, he may try to mount that mare, which would be extremely dangerous for both riders. Stallions require much more attention and management. When you haul him, you will want to put him in the very front of the trailer if you can; that is, if you have more than a two horse trailer. Putting Vicks Vapor Run in his nose is not a bad idea, since he will not be able to smell whether the mares in the trailer with him are in heat. I would suggest you consult with a horse person who has had a lot of experience in handling stallions to assist you in managing your stallion. Stallions can be very docile and quiet, but without the proper training, they can become unruly and hurt someone. Stallions are unique animals and have to be managed differently than mares and geldings.
