Can I safely use rock salt to melt the ice in areas where my horses walk?

While you can use salt, excessive salt could be harmful to the paddock and may affect your ability to grow grass in the area later. The other concern is the effect of salt on your horses' feet. You might try something like sand or cat litter to provide traction for the horses.
