The number of nails placed in a shoe depends on many factors; however, it is rather standard to place only six nails in a shoe, usually leaving the two rear nails out to allow for increased heel expansion. Many farriers, when turning handmade shoes, will punch the shoe for only three nails per side. Depending on the quality of horn of the foot, the interval between shoeings, what the horse is doing and many other factors, the number of nails used will vary -- sometimes eight to as few as four.
