Where possible, removal of risk factors such as excessive training, prolonged fasting, or stall confinement can help restore balance between peptic aggression and epithelial defense. Horses turned out to pasture generally heal quickly with little or no intervention. Michael Murray, D.V.M., one of the leading ulcer researchers in the country, states that the best methods of prevention -- either dietary, training, and/or medical -- will require further research. Suggested feeding: free access to pasture and plenty of hay are recommended. Grain and concentrates should be avoided while the ulcer is healing.
