Horses will naturally desire to go back to the barn or to other horses. In fact, they probably always have somewhere they would rather be going instead of where we want them to go. To reinforce the reining cue, simply lay your rein on the horse's neck and apply leg pressure with the opposite leg for the way you want him to go. If he fails to move off the rein and your leg, reach down and use direct rein pressure by pulling on the rein in the direction you wish him to go. As soon as the horse responds, release ALL pressure. This will probably take some time and repeated cueing for the horse to respond appropriately. It is critical that you use enough pressure to get a response. It is also critical that you take away the pressure as soon as the horse responds.
