Apparently some claims were made that the West Nile virus vaccine had caused some abortions and birth defects in some horses in the western United States. This was reported in a Denver newspaper. Fort Dodge Company, the manufacturer of the vaccine, investigated these reports and did not find any correlation with the reported abortions and birth defects. Fort Dodge's veterinary staff has reported that the vaccine has been used in many horses throughout the United States without any of the problems which were claimed. No other reports have surfaced anywhere that the West Nile vaccine causes abortions or birth defects when used in pregnant mares.
