If you have a stallion, you will need all of the collection equipment, facilities, etc. An artificial vagina (A.V.), microscope, supplies, etc. will cost $1,000 to $3,000 depending on the quality of the equipment. A mounting dummy, restraining stocks for mares, and teasing facilities will add another $2,000 or more depending on how many horses you have to breed. The most important consideration is the training you will need to be successful in the breeding business. Plan to attend an A.I. short course at a university before you purchase any equipment or make the decision to start a breeding business.
