Mares that are in the early stages of their reproductive cycle, which is known as the transition phase, will commonly have the situation that you have described. However, most of these mares do not have regular cycles. They tend to be very irregular in their expression of estrus. Mares that are cycling normally should be checked to see what the size of their follicle is before breeding and then be monitored every other day until ovulation. If ovulation is not occurring following development of a 35-mm follicle or above, a product called HCG can be used to cause ovulation. Administration of this drug in a normal mare with a follicle of greater than 35 mm usually results in ovulation within 24 hours.
