My horse developed a "windsucking" sound (usually when she is ridden). Is this something I should be concerned with?

The windsucking sound is probably an obstruction in her throat. Typically the muscles that hold the larynx open relax and obstruct the passageway. Therefore, the horse is required to force air in and out of the lungs, which makes the noise. Since the sound is not apparent unless the horse is ridden and the horse is not sick, other disease-related causes are not likely. Your veterinarian can make an exact diagnosis and suggest a remedy. There is an operation for this condition. This problem should have no effect on your mare's breeding capability.
