Will hindleg deformities correct themselves?

Last Updated: August 17, 2006

In most cases, abnormalities like the hind pasterns sloping the wrong direction are developmental problems in the mare. Generally these problems will resolve themselves in a couple of weeks. The pressure of the foal's body weight will stretch the tendons, and the foal will be fine. If it doesn't resolve itself quickly, a veterinarian can clip the tendons to provide relief. If the foal doesn't show significant improvement in a couple of weeks, contact your veterinarian.
