What are the best horse types for trail riding?

The key characteristics for a good trail horse are an easy gait, strength, endurance, and a quiet mind. Because of the length of time of the typical trail ride, a quiet and comfortable horse is of prime importance. The roughness and length of the trail will dictate the importance of strength and endurance. There are a number of breeds that possess these characteristics, so breed should not be a significant factor.
