New riders need a well-trained tolerant horse that they can safely learn from. Typically, look for an older horse (10 years or older) that has been ridden by young or inexperienced riders. The horse should not be too sensitive or responsive. As rider skill improves, the horse will be more responsive. Avoid young horses and highly trained show horses. Also, find an instructor and take lessons. The instructor may also be able to help you find the right horse to start on and advise you when and if you need a better horse.
