Horse-safe plants vary depending on the region of the country. Plants such as Japanese yew, red maple trees, some oak trees, black walnut, larkspur, avocado, and horse chestnut are a few that should be avoided. A complete list of poisonous plants can be found at Cornell University's website. It is always a good management practice to fence off or deny horses access to plants and shrubs used for landscaping. In pastures or paddocks, it is recommended to put a fence around trees and to pick up fallen limbs to limit horse exposure and hopefully reduce problems.
